Free Web Content in Exchange for Text Links

By Shalom Issenberg | October 14, 2007

In my last post I mentioned how finding the right writer for your website’s content is not always an easy task. There is one source for good web content that is not just plentiful - but absolutely free; Link Builders.

SEO has two main parts: On-page and Off-page. On-page optimization refers to content optimization, meta tag optimization, coding and internal link architecture (internal page navigation), amongst a few other things. Off-page refers to link building and external site promotion. Many site marketers will be happy to write content for other people’s sites in exchange for a link. Examples of this type of barter can be seen with article / E-zine sites, pay per post blog offers and other submit article/story to sites. This content is usually either very niche focused or really general site reviews.

Is this free content worth using? Well it depends on the written piece you receive in the end. Also you never want to exchange content for a link that might compete with your business or have negative marketing/branding implications (i.e. having to link to a non-relevant site or even an adult site that might earn you a reputation as a link seller or get you listed on some search engine blacklist).

Where can you find people offering free content? Well, its pretty simple - just search online for SEO forums. You will find many offers and a lot of bartering happening on those sites. Finding the right opportunity should be a piece of cake and many times you will find that the Link Builders offering content in exchange for a link will also pay some compensation as well. SEO Link broker’s are also a good way to find the right link exchange for web content opportunities.

Basically - trading links for content is a good free source for web content. I would just be sure to follow a few simple rules when making such exchanges.

  1. Be sure that the content you get is in line with your site’s subject, tone, and goals.
  2. Be sure that the link you give away is to a reputable site that is not going to hurt your brand or your own optimization efforts.
  3. Avoid casino, pharmacy, adult/pornography, link directory sites and others that might hurt your site.
  4. Try to make deals with sites that compliment your own site - example if you offer mortgage information - linking to a real estate site may have some value. However a link to a web hosting site (just because they offer you content) offers very little to your visitors and therefore is not great for your site. Keep your links relevant!

Developing content for your website or blog doesn’t have to be your full time job. You can get a lot if you are willing to give a little.
