SEO Advice From Mohamed Ali

By Shalom Issenberg | January 4, 2008

Research is important in determining your SEO (search engine optimization) goals. But the best approach to getting the best traffic fast is to be flexible. Boxers move around the ring on their toes, allowing them to shift direction quickly and leverage their weight behind each punch. SEOs need to do the same! Your research will take you so far, but experience and nature (specifically organic linking) will change things. Don’t treat your on-site optimization as a permanent fixture of your site.

For example: You might be building a lot of web content for keyword traffic and link bait. Early in the game you may notice that your home page is getting a lot of links with anchor text descriptive of a relevant keyphrase that you don’t target on your index page. Based on your PPC campaigns you know that that keyphrase delivers less traffic but a high rate of conversion. Your original keyword targets  have not been met yet – so while building your link equity around your more competitive keyword targets you can capitalize on the organic push for the less competitive keyphrase and re optimize your index page to utilize the strength of your current inbound links.

As you grow stronger off-page for your originally targeted keywords you can always switch back when it makes sense mathematically.

A great strategist once said… “Float like a butterfly and sting like a bee”.
