Is SEO dead?

By Shalom Issenberg | November 24, 2007

There is always a lot of buzz in the world of internet marketing about SEO being dead. “The Big G” killed SEO”. Every marketing guy complaining that SEO doesn’t exist. I disagree. SEO has definitely changed in the last couple of years. It’s definitely more difficult with more sophisticated algorithms and heavy competition in almost every vertical. Is it dead though? Not at all! SEO is still alive and worth every effort. Can an online property depend on SEO solely? I would say no. I spend a lot of time marketing sites in the business finance sector. Both PPC and SEO are extremely competitive and likewise can be lucrative marketing channels for the right businesses. One thing I will suggest is that SEO alone is not usually an effective marketing approach – however a combined effort in PPC, SEO and SMO can produce great results, with each individual marketing aspect supporting the other. PPC and social both support SEO – alone SEO could never be as successful. Using PPC to learn the best targets (keywords) and SMO to build link equity and branding can help you realize a better ROI on SEO faster and with greater results.

SEO is not dead, it’s different. Internet marketing in general is a fast changing game with many players and a complex set of rules.
