Directories, Link Farms and Splogs, Oh My!
By Shalom Issenberg | December 17, 2007
The 90′s are behind us. Stop dreaming about taking over the SERPs with a less than creative link farm or reciprocal directory. Search engine algorithms can easily pick up on unsophisticated linking schemes such as link farms, PR directories and poorly assembled Splogs.
That’s not to say that they still don’t work. In actuality, linking schemes can still be very effective. In order for a linking scheme to be effective, its structure must be void of any footprint obvious enough for the most “intelligent algorithm” to find.
Some footprints are:
- IP address
- Titles
- Template
- Common links
- Whois info
I am not promoting the use of link farms or linking schemes, I can tell you with all honesty that I would not get involved with one myself, however….. If I were going to create one this is what I would do…
- Get separate hosting or at least separate IP addresses with as much variation in classes as possible
- Make sure titles, descriptions, and other content pieces on sites (e.g. copyright info) are unique
- Don’t use the same HTML or blog template
- Keep domains private
- Don’t link all sites together – vary the linking structure

Of course you could just build a site with great original content and promote your website though social media and online buzz. Not everyone wants to wait for things to happen naturally!
P.S. Apologies for the use of the phrase “intelligent algorithm”, I realize that it’s an oxymoron.
