Yoggie Security Appliance: You’re better off getting a virus!
By Shalom Issenberg | November 29, 2007
About six months ago my computer was momentarily hijacked leading to a series of issues that I would have loved to avoid. The situation was caused by malware infecting my system and leaking sensitive information regarding access codes to the wrong hands.
I thought I was doing my best to prevent this type of thing from happening – but where there is a will there is a way, and the malicious attempts of professional hackers was greater than my efforts to prevent them. I was equipped with a personal firewall, spyware software and a virus scanner – but it still was not enough.
I came across the Yoggie miniature security appliance. I bought one for $200 and felt a greater sense of security once I plugged it into to my laptop simply via USB. In theory this is a great product – the idea is that it routes all internet traffic through the mini Linux appliance screening and blocking any type of virus, spyware, malware or hacking attempt.
Of course what I really got was…
A “battery vampire” that eventually stopped working due to some manufacturer defect. The Yoggie device literally transformed my portable laptop into an under performing small desktop – because with the Yoggie device plugged in I had 25 minutes battery life compared to 2.5 hours without it. Also, more times than was actually true, it detected viruses on websites – that after doing a refresh found to be clean of viruses.
Eventually, after the unit stopped working – or rather was working but prevented me from using the internet all together, I sent it back to the manufacturer after they promised to replace the defective unit. I sent the unit in September 5, 2007, today is November 29, 2007 and I still have not got the replacement unit.
Don’t get the Yoggie security device – you are better off with a virus!
