Where Did My Adsense Go?

By Shalom Issenberg | September 28, 2007

If you read my brief bio “The Creator“,  I mentioned that I have created many sites and blogs that eventually fall to the side, unmanaged, unpromoted, even incomplete. This tends to happen as I become suddenly inspired and then slowly realize my own time limitations.

One day I decided to create a made for adsense site. Not the typical low quality made for adsense sites you see participating in google adwords, but a good site that would generate revenue from google’s adsense program. The site is a fairly sophisticated online calculator that can help users determine estimated costs for any home renovation or remodeling project. In fact the site is useful and extremely helpful for home owners interested in a general price online without having to appoach a contractor offline.

I created the layout with adsense incoproated into each of the calculator pages. Horizontal ad units across the top, left vertical and search for adsense at the bottom. Although I never promoted the site, even after the first month I received a fair bit of traffic. I watched the pennies roll into my adsense acount daily with a new sense of confidence in the “Big G”!

Suddenly one day I noticed that the pennies stopped coming in. I quickly checked my site to see that it was still up and noticed something strange. Although my site was functioning, all my adsence ads were gone. Apparently google determined the site to be of low quality, simply because there was not enough written content on the page. Ok, true, written content is minimal, but the site is a practical web application that is useful and relevent to its users.

I contacted google about it and asked them to investigate the issue, but in the end adsense was forbidden on the site. Honestly, it doesn’t matter that much, except my integrated adsense design was left with huge blank spots where ads used to be. In the mean time I have placed some generic service magic banners just as place holders for a future MSN or YSM publisher codes (when I find the time). But the worste part about it is; I am personally offended that google determined the site to be of “low quality”. It’s well researched, developed with complicated logic, and offers great functioanlity - At least thats my opinion, but maybe its biased a little.

You can check it out and judge for yourself (just make sure to keep in mind that the service magic banners are temporary and not part of the original design).
