Proud To Be A DMOZ Editor

By Shalom Issenberg | November 14, 2008

I remember the days when I would actually turn to dmoz.org to find useful websites (those were the days). With the quality of modern search engine results, directories don’t play an important role in driving traffic online.

DMOZ might have a chance to be an exception to the rule. It’s very common to come across DMOZ category pages in the SERPs. Sadly many DMOZ pages are outdated without any new additions since early 2007 and many even less up to date. This needs to change!

You know how difficult it is to get a new site listed in DMOZ; Impossible for some categories that are going unmanaged. DMOZ is 100% human moderated and edited. Editing a directory, especially one as big as DMOZ is a huge project requiring thousands of volunteers. So you can understand why this problem exists.

Instead of just “bitching” about it, I decided to take an active role in helping to maintain and update DMOZ. I volunteered for a category of interest and spend a couple hours a week updating it. Yes, it’s kind of a “pain in the ass” and for that reason I devote only a few hours to it. I think if more people took an active role there would be a lot less crying and complaining in SEO forums about how DMOZ is unfair and editors don’t approve listings.

I think that every one who can, should help. Especially SEO’s and webmasters who understand the web best and can help to improve it.

In conclusion…

As of today there are 81,654 editors for over 590,000 categories – do the math!
