I Hate SEO Clients

By Shalom Issenberg | March 19, 2008

Why do some companies even hire SEO & SEM professionals?

I try to never report too much to clients. Not because I’m hiding information – but because the more information you give them the more confused they get. And when clients get confused they become more involved. Many times “involved” means interfering. A client who has never managed a single keyword suddenly becomes your advisor. This consumes time, educating your client on the thought processes behind every micro decision regarding their search marketing. All this even after producing a good ROI and what should be enough to earn a client’s basic trust.

Of course I’m overgeneralising, this is not always the case. Sometimes the opposite happens. You send a couple of detailed campaign/keyword reports and the client after seeing PPC statistics for the first time, believes that it’s actually incredibly simple and could be managed internally. It really is that easy! [sarcasm... if you missed it] Then after two months when their once optimized campaigns spin out of control and conversion costs double, they begin to realize that it might have appeared a bit easier then it actually is. Too late. :(

Maybe it looks simple. To some it really isn’t that difficult; Depends who.

All I am suggesting is that companies interested in hiring SEOs/SEMs should consider two things very seriously:

1) Is it what you really want?
2) If you get it will you be happy?

If you answer “no” to any of these questions please hire someone else.
